Dr. Barnett is a native of Johnson City, TN and attended East Tennessee State University before going to Medical School at the University of Virginia.  Following that, he completed his internship and Orthopedic Surgery residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  He has been practicing in the Asheville area since 2009 specializing in hip and knee replacements and  joined Carolina Hand and Sports in 2022.  Dr. Barnett was one of the first surgeons to bring Direct Anterior Approach hip replacement to Western North Carolina and now utilizes it for all of his hip replacements.  He was also the first surgeon in Western North Carolina to utilize robotic assistance for partial knee replacements and to routinely use modern cementless technology for knee replacements.  These techniques have helped quickly return patients to an active lifestyle with the least post-operative limitations. Building on this momentum and with the changes in healthcare stemming from the Covid 19 Pandemic, he began performing these same procedures as an outpatient (same day discharge) procedure.  This has become a special interest and the majority of Dr Barnett’s total joint patients now go home the same day as their surgery.  Dr. Barnett does hip and knee replacement surgery at both the Outpatient Surgery Center of Asheville and Mission Hospital.

When he is not working, Dr Barnett enjoys running, skiing, hiking, and travelling to new places with his wife and daughters.

My care philosophy is to listen to the limitations and problems of each person to provide them with a treatment that is most appropriate to get them back to their desired activities.
