Sports-related knee injuries

The knee is the most common site for injury in young athletes, particularly for those involved in “cutting” sports, such as football, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Treating sports-related knee injuries is one of our specialties. Our patients have included professional and collegiate athletes as well as active children and adults in Asheville. Common sports-related knee injuries and treatment options include:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears & Sprains
  • Cartilage Lesions
  • Collateral Ligament Injuries (MCL or LCL tears)
  • Knee Arthroscopy
  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease
  • Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD)
  • Patella Fracture
  • Tendon Tears: Patellar and Quadriceps Tendons
  • Meniscus Tear: twisting and/or awkward knee flexion that causes damage to the fibro-cartilage pad that sits between the thigh bone and shin bone
  • Dislocated kneecap: when a sudden change in direction puts your kneecap under stress or slips it to the outside of the knee

Overuse injuries and chronic knee pain

Running, hiking, cycling and tennis are excellent for keeping your body and mind healthy. Unfortunately,  the repetitive motion in these activities can result in knee pain over time. In additional to finding effective treatment options to stop your pain, we will help you pinpoint the underlying cause so you can prevent injury in the future. Chronic knee injuries and treatment options include:

  • Patellar Tendinitis (Jumper’s Knee)
  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome (front of the knee pain)
  • Bursitis: Pes Anserine (Knee Tendon) and Prepatellar (Kneecap)
  • Shin Splints
  • Stress Fractures
  • Unstable Kneecap

Knee arthritis (osteoarthritis of the knee)

With knee osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the knee gradually wears away, causing pain and swelling. We’ve successfully treated hundreds of arthritis patients in Asheville and Valdese, and will work with you to find effective solutions to help you feel, move and live better.
